Chant

Arranger/Composer: Gary D. Ziek

Item Code: 05420

Publisher: C. Alan Publications

The opening motive of Chant is stated in the solos in the trombone and horn. Shifting to a faster tempo, the theme goes through a variety of keys and instrumentation, placing heavy technical demands upon the entire ensemble. The atmosphere changes, as the chant theme is transformed into one hymn-like character, enhanced by the full ensemble with a variety of shimmering timbres in the piano and percussion. After an intense transition, the chant theme reappears, concluding the work with a sense of hope and jubilation.

Program Notes

The opening motive of Chant is stated in the solos in the trombone and horn. The ensemble begins a long crescendo, building to a powerful conclusion to the introduction. Shifting to a faster tempo, the theme goes through a variety of keys and instrumentation, placing heavy technical demands upon the entire ensemble. The atmosphere changes, as the chant theme is transformed into one hymn-like character. This idea is stated initially by the woodwinds and is soon enhanced by the full ensemble with a variety of shimmering timbres in the piano and percussion. The transition gradually grows in intensity, while progressing through a number of keys. The chant theme reappears in the new key of F major, concluding the work with a sense of hope and jubilation. Chant is the third movement of the Symphony for Winds and Percussion, composed in 1997.
