Program Notes
Crux is the smallest of the 88 modern constellations, but is one of the most distinctive. Its name is Latin for cross, and it is dominated by a cross-shaped pattern of stars that is commonly known as the Southern Cross. Some of the many definitions of the word "cross" were also considered while composing the work, such as: any object, figure, or mark resembling a cross, as two opposing lines; an opposing; a thwarting; a mixing of breeds; to meet and pass; to mark with a cross; to move, pass, extend from one side to the other side; something involving interchange, or is reciprocal; contrary; or opposite.
