Reverie (Debussy)

The definition of reverie is “a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream.” The quiet, reflective passages of this beautifully simple work wander about very much as if in a dream. Reverie was originally written for piano solo but is here transcribed for mallet ensemble.

Program Notes
Claude Debussy (1862-1918) was one of the most important and influential composers at the turn of the last century. He wrote ÔÇ£what he wanted to hearÔÇØ and broke many of the then current rules of composition, giving his music a fresh new sound. Due to the colorful, dreamy quality of his musical style he was dubbed an ÔÇ£impressionistÔÇØ by music critics, much to his dislike.
