Program Notes
The Summoning of Katakhanes was commissioned by Jeff White & Nick Steward. Both the yak bera and the davula are traditional Sri Lankan drums. Both are cylindrical and are suspended from the waist. The yak bera (or “demon drum”) is a low country drum used to accompany masked dancers; it is played with two open palms. The davula is used in Buddhist ceremonies throughout the island; it is much shorter than the yak bera, and is played with one palm and one stick.
