Thunder requires technical command of the instrument as well as a keen sense of musicality. The inspiration of the work comes directly from the title and is represented by the heavy articulated double stops in the opening of the piece. The metallic sounds used in the middle portion of the work are meant to evoke the image of lightning in the audiences' mind upon listening.
Program Notes
Thunder was written for percussionist Kathryn Irwin, a graduate student attending the University of Kansas. This piece was a part of Project Create 2013. During which, I composed a single solo instrumental work per day in the month of June and dedicated it to the first person to select an instrument by commenting on my Facebook post. Kathryn was the first to comment on June 26, 2013, choosing timpani.
