Phantasie

Phantasie is a German term defined as: fancy, imagination, or reverie. It’s probably best defined as a ‘fantasy piece’ or ‘fantasy picture.’ The opening dissonant introduction gives the impression of a ‘fantasy’ element. The piece moves past the dissonance into a more melodic and rhythmic tone with repetitious accompaniment figures.
Program Notes
Phantasie is a German term defined as: fancy, imagination, or reverie. It’s probably best defined as a ‘fantasy piece’ or ‘fantasy picture.’ The opening dissonant introduction gives the impression of a ‘fantasy’ element. The piece moves past the dissonance into a more melodic and rhythmic tone with repetitious accompaniment figures. The piece demands a delicate touch and care must be taken to make sure the right hand melodic figures are not overshadowed by the constant movement of the accompaniment. Take a close look at dynamic markings. Pedaling is indicated throughout the piece and should be strictly adhered to. Make note of the tempo marking at the beginning (quarter note = 76) and at letter A (half-note = 76). Tempo remains constant throughout the rest of the piece until the ritardando at measure 71. Medium to medium hard cord mallets would be the best choice for performing Phantasie.
