The Summoning of Katakhanes is an exciting duet for two percussionists utilizing several ethnic percussion instrument, including traditional Sri Lankan drums.

Program Notes

The Summoning of Katakhanes was commissioned by Jeff White & Nick Steward. Both the yak bera and the davula are traditional Sri Lankan drums. Both are cylindrical and are suspended from the waist. The yak bera (or “demon drum”) is a low country drum used to accompany masked dancers; it is played with two open palms. The davula is used in Buddhist ceremonies throughout the island; it is much shorter than the yak bera, and is played with one palm and one stick.
